Yes, it's true, I do still knit, even though being a full-time minister cuts into my crafting time quite a bit! Lately, I have found insomnia to be a very helpful aspect in my quest to finish some of the many projects that I have on the needles.
This morning I woke up at 5am, and rather than rolling around thinking too hard about complicated things, I got up, made some coffee, and got to work finishing my Cowgirl Cowl!
It's basically a cowl with a triangle attached, so it ends up looking like a big bandanna, but stays on your neck better than a regular small shawl would. It's knit flat and buttons up the back of the neck. I knit this in The Fibre Company's Terra yarn, which is one of my favorites. It's a silk/alpaca/merino blend, and these iPhone pictures cannot do the color ("olive leaf") justice. The different fibers take the dye differently, and it's a single ply with a slubby texture, so it just glows.
I found these natural stone buttons for the neck, and they were the perfect earthy addition to this cozy cowl. The only downside of using this yarn for this cowl (besides the cost!), is that because of the texture of the yarn, the stitch definition makes the patterning in the cowl less obvious than it's perhaps meant to be.
Do I mind? No way! I love it. I knit much of this cowl sitting in the Belly Bowl during my time off at the Michigan Womyn's Music Festival, and even though it was hot and sticky, I love this yarn so much that I didn't mind knitting with sweaty fingers!
Now I'm back in my chilly office in Santa Cruz, and I'm enjoying the cozy warmth it brings--the shape and size is just enough to ward off the chill without making me feel like I'm draped in a woolly sweater. Plus, it's just plain cute! Here you can see the shape when it's flat:
A final bonus? It looks great with my latest pair of cowgirl boots!

I would like one for Christmas, please. You can use a cheaper yarn if you want.
